For over a decade I lived near the village of Volcano, Hawaii in a native Ohia rainforest. My house was about 10 kilometers from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park so I would go there whenever I could. Here was a place that displayed the essential forces of earth, air, fire and water. The basic elements that make our very appearance possible. This had quite a profound impact on me, witnessing firsthand how elegant and symbiotic everything actually works so to speak. Occasionally I would even see new land suddenly appear which only moments before didn’t exist.
One of the things that amazed me about this area is that after only a couple of years because of birds, wind, the warm weather and the abundant moisture Hapuu ferns (a pioneering species) would take hold in the crevices of the surface flow lava (in particular Pahoehoe) beginning a whole new cycle of interacting plants and animals.
Kilauea Volcano, on the island of Hawaii rests on the eastern flank of Mauna Loa, the largest shield volcano on Earth. The Pu'u 'Ō'ō vent on Kilauea began it’s eruption phase in 1982 and continues to this day, making it one of the planet’s most active volcanoes.
